Lan Kwai Fong is well past its sell by date, and SoHo is so five minutes ago.
Catching the 12 midnight jetfoil back to Hong Kong from Macau last Friday night, I had just missed the last train to Sheung Shui.
Faced with a HK$250 taxi ride, I decided to make the most of it and stop for a drink with friends before making the long – and costly – trek North.
In search of live music, my buddies and I decided to give Lan Kwai Fong and SoHo a miss, catching a taxi instead to the Wanch, as Wanchai (of Suzie Wong fame), is known locally.
Piling out of our taxi a few minutes later, we took an elevator up a couple of floors, but the club didn't pass muster. It was deserted, and we left – much to the disappointment of staff, who were hoping – obviously – for something to do.
Making a Splash at Splash
Crossing the street, we heard music emanating from a smallish corner club called Splash Wan Chai.
The place wasn't exactly busting at the seams. There were as many musicians on the stage as there were customers at the bar – if not more. But we liked what we heard, so we walked in, sat down, and ordered drinks.
There was something about this place. It really made you want to stand up and boogie!
It wasn't long before one member of our smallish group (who shall remain nameless) was dancing with lead singer Elaine, who had moved from the stage to the dance floor.
Not only did Elaine have a fabulous voice, she also knew how to engage a crowd.
Too bad I didn't get the group's name because these musicians could really wail, belting out everything from rhythm and blues to Pop to Lady Gaga to Chinese ballads - and always with soul.
Splash Wan Chai is a stylish Art Deco inspired club in the heart Wanchai's entertainment district on Hong Kong Island. It is open until the wee hours.
